Central Air Conditioning Systems

Nothing beats the ease and simplicity of central air conditioning. Integrated into your home’s existing ductwork and controllable by your regular thermostat, it provides not only cooling but humidity control as well. Best of all, there’s no bulky unit in your indoor rooms. If needed, we can install custom ductwork for you.

Brands

Dr HVAC carries air conditioners by Trane, and our own in-house model. We also install your preferred brand (like Napoleon air conditioners) and model on request.

Why We Love Trane

In our experience, Tranes are one of the most reliable air conditioners available. They are built to last, even when they are used heavily. No company stands behind their products like Trane does, with their famous 10-year parts guarantee (we add our own 10-year labour guarantee). We really feel they’ve gone the extra mile to make a great product, and have tested them extensively to get rid of nuisance problems before they happen.

Ductless Air Conditioners (Mini Split)

If you live in an older home without existing ductwork, ductless ACs may be a great option for you. Ductless air conditioners rely on thin cables that are easy to run through walls, and don’t require damaging or expensive construction. The indoor units can be mounted on the ceiling or a wall, where they’re out of the way.

Heat Pumps

If you’re in the market for an air conditioner, you might also be considering a heat pump. The difference between heat pumps and air conditioners is that they are a combination heating/cooling unit. In the summer, they’re a hyper-efficient air conditioner. In the fall, they reverse direction to bring the warmth in, so you don’t need to turn on your furnace until it’s colder.

When it comes to cooling, heat pumps will save more money. You can install them in any house type, with or without ducts, and installing one will cost about the same as a standard AC installation.

Do I Need to Install A New Air Conditioner?

Wondering how long air conditioners last in Canada? Your air conditioning system will usually last about 10-15 years. If you know the exact age of the system installed in your home, it’s easy to know if it’s nearing the end of its useful life. However, if the air conditioner installation was done by a previous owner, it’s not always obvious when it’s time to replace your air conditioning system.

Financing HVAC Systems Options

Older air conditioning systems have a few strikes against them. If they use R22 Refrigerant (known as Freon), you should know that it will eventually become illegal. Canada has begun phasing out the sale and use of Freon due to its ozone-depleting properties. If you have a refrigerant leak and need your system topped up, you won’t be able to purchase the R22 that you need. And eventually, you will not be allowed to run your R22-based A/C at all.

Not only will repairs be expensive (or outright impossible) for older units, but the environmental toll will be much higher than if you replace it with a more energy efficient unit. A/C energy usage is measured in terms of the ratio of BTUs of cooling energy to the watt-hour of electrical consumption (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio). The old SEER ratings were a minimum of 10; that has now increased to 13 or better.

Another factor (which is not unique to older units) is how much you’re spending on repairs. When your A/C is costing you a fortune in fixes, it could be time to install a new air conditioner. Consider a large repair bill for an older (but still serviceable) unit may be half the cost of a new replacement unit.

However, if you need to make another costly repair in a year or two (or 5) suddenly that short term cost-saving repair will end up costing you more than if you had just replaced the unit to begin with! Plus, that new air conditioner unit will come with a warranty and the expectation of trouble free operation for a decade.

Last but not least, consider your home’s comfort factor. If the A/C leaves your indoor air humid and sticky-feeling, cools unevenly or is overly noisy, it’s probably time to look into a better model, such as a new Trane air conditioner.

How We Make Sure You Get The Right System

Every home is unique, and every home owner has preferences regarding energy efficiency and budget. That’s why we take the time to visit your home in person before we recommend a system to you. Here are some of the things our comfort consultants check during the consultation:

  • We measure your home to confirm the square footage.
  • We analyze hot/cold zones created by different sun exposures.
  • We factor in electricity costs and help you figure out what level of energy efficiency will help your monthly electricity bills.
  • We find out about any issues with allergies. While air conditioners don’t get rid of pollen and other allergens we can help you with a better air filter than you can get at the hardware store.
  • We factor in your budget. If needed, we can help you with rebates and financing.

We then provide a proposal and outline any options including the Dr HVAC 10 year labour guarantee.
