Heat Pump FAQs

Q: Is a heat pump better than an air conditioner?

Both heat pumps and air conditioner units in Brampton utilize the refrigeration cycle to cool your home. To assess whether one offers better performance than the other, it’s important to consider their respective sizes, cooling features, and efficiency ratings.

However, if your home requires heating as well as cooling, a heat pump offers a versatile solution by providing both functions throughout the year. In contrast, an air conditioner is specifically designed to cool your home.

Q: How do air source heat pumps work?

A:  Air source heat pumps work differently from furnaces. A heat pump basically move heat from one place to the other using a refrigerant that responds to temperature. In summer, a heat pump will move heat out of your home and release it into the outdoor air. In fall, it brings heat into your home from outside, even when it’s chilly.

Q: Do you really save money with a heat pump?

When it comes to cooling, heat pumps will save more money. To find out how much, compare the SEER level of the heat pump to the SEER rating of your current air conditioner. You can convert the difference to a percent to get an idea of the savings. For example, a 20 SEER heat pump is over 53% more efficient than a 13 SEER air conditioner.

For heat energy, a heat pump will save money depending on the temperature and the current gas rates versus electricity rates. As of 2018 in Toronto, it saves money to use your heat pump until it drops below 2°C to 4°C. Then you should switch to your natural gas furnace. We can give you the latest information during our consultation.

Q: How much does it cost to install a heat pump?

A: When it comes to buying a heat pump, it’s about the same cost as installing a regular air conditioner. The actual cost will depend on the model you choose and your existing home heating and cooling setup. Don’t worry – we always give you an exact price quote in advance which shows all costs involved with heat pumps.

Q: I have an old house without ductwork. Can I still get a heat pump?

A: Yes, you can. There are heat pump ductless systems that have a unit that goes on your wall or ceiling, and it’s connected to the outdoor unit by a thin line. There’s almost no mess when installing heat pumps.
