Heat Pump FAQs
Q: What kind of rebates are available for Heat Pumps?
Ontario customers looking to purchase a heat pump can receive a rebate through the Canada Greener Homes Grant. The Canada Greener Homes Grant is designed to encourage homeowners to make energy-efficient upgrades to their homes by providing them with financial incentives. One of the upgrades that qualify for this program is heat pump installation, which not only helps homeowners reduce their heating and cooling energy costs but also minimizes their carbon footprint.
To be eligible for the heat pump rebate, homeowners need to undergo a home energy audit conducted by a certified energy advisor. This audit will identify areas in the home that would benefit from energy-efficient upgrades, including heat pump installation.
Q: How do air source heat pumps work?
A: Air source heat pumps work differently from furnaces. A heat pump basically move heat from one place to the other using a refrigerant that responds to temperature. In summer, a heat pump will move heat out of your home and release it into the outdoor air. In fall, it brings heat into your home from outside, even when it’s chilly.
Q: Do you really save money with a heat pump?
When it comes to cooling, heat pumps will save more money. To find out how much, compare the SEER level of the heat pump to the SEER rating of your current air conditioner. You can convert the difference to a percent to get an idea of the savings. For example, a 20 SEER heat pump is over 53% more efficient than a 13 SEER air conditioner.
For heat energy, a heat pump will save money depending on the temperature and the current gas rates versus electricity rates. As of 2018 in Toronto, it saves money to use your heat pump until it drops below 2°C to 4°C. Then you should switch to your natural gas furnace. We can give you the latest information during our consultation.
Q: How much does it cost to install a heat pump?
A: When it comes to buying a heat pump, it’s about the same cost as installing a regular air conditioner. The actual cost will depend on the model you choose and your existing home heating and cooling setup. Don’t worry – we always give you an exact price quote in advance which shows all costs involved with heat pumps.
Q: I have an old house without ductwork. Can I still get a heat pump?
A: Yes, you can. There are heat pump ductless systems that have a unit that goes on your wall or ceiling, and it’s connected to the outdoor unit by a thin line. There’s almost no mess when installing heat pumps.
