There might be a whole range of reasons your central air is running but not giving you that nice cold air. It might be as simple as a thermostat that hasn’t been properly set, or blocked vents. Your filter might be in need of replacement, or there might be debris on your outdoor condenser unit. If you’ve had no luck with a DIY solution, it might be a refrigerant leak or in need of mechanical ac repairs.

The first thing to check when your AC stops working is your thermostat (is it on the correct setting?), followed by replacing your air filter. If your system isn’t receiving the proper amount of clean air, it won’t work correctly. Be on the lookout for ice build-up when you check both your indoor and outdoor units—this might indicate low coolant or restriction of airflow. If you know you can’t fix the problem on your own, it’s time to give Dr HVAC a call.

On average, air conditioners last about 10 to 15 years. If you know your system is nearing the end of its useful life, it’s probably time to replace your AC. Older units may use R22 refrigerant (aka “Freon”), a dangerous ozone-depleting substance. They also aren’t as energy efficient as newer models. These days, a SEER rating should be a minimum of 13 (older ratings were a minimum of 10).
